Sprouting Gardeners Club

Sprouting Gardeners connects kids to food in a meaningful way through gardening and cooking. Kids will experience garden to table food and also take part in activities that explore the urban ecosystem and teach conservation. Kids will learn from guest presenters, hands-on activities and unique experiences. Kids will take away knowledge of how plants grow, where our food comes from, the plant ecosystem and how to be gardeners in their community.

SESSION DESCRIPTIONS

Week 1: July 14 – Louisville’s Wildlife Locals
*Second Chances Wildlife Rescue presents a show and tell session to teach kids about two animals that live in Louisville’s urban ecosystem – bats and opossums. Kids will learn the unique and important roles these two animals play in our local ecosystem.

In addition, kids will explore Louisville Grows’ garden and eat a freshly prepared snack made from the vegetables grown in the garden. We end the morning planting seeds that each child will take home to start their own garden.

**Live animals will be present in safe enclosures – no petting is allowed.

Week 2: July 21 – The World of Insects

*Idlewild Butterfly Farm presents a show and tell presentation about insects from around the world. Kids will get to view live insects and learn about them from entomologists who are specialized in the study of insects. Our presenters will also talk with kids about why insects are an important part of the ecosystem.

In addition, kids will explore Louisville Grows’ garden and eat a freshly prepared snack made from the vegetables grown in the garden. We end the morning planting seeds that each child will take home to start their own garden.

Week 3: July 28 – Water Conservation

Thirsty of knowledge? Louisville MSD visits with a special presentation to talk with kids about a very important natural resource — water! Kids will learn why water conservation is a smart idea, how the ecosystem benefits from conserving water, and see a rain garden in action.

In addition, kids will explore Louisville Grows’ garden and eat a freshly prepared snack made from the vegetables grown in the garden. We end the morning planting seeds that each child will take home to start their own garden.

Week 4: August 4 – Every Day is Earth Day

Louisville Waste Management visits with us to talk about how we can keep the Earth a clean and healthy place to live. Kids will learn about recycling, composting, and make a fun upcycled arts and crafts project.

In addition, kids will explore Louisville Grows’ garden and eat a freshly prepared snack made from the vegetables grown in the garden. We end the morning planting seeds that each child will take home to start their own garden.

Free and open to the public. Parents or guardians are welcome to attend, but it is not necessary.
