The Shawnee Garden of Principles

The Shawnee Garden of Principles is based on the Principles of Kwanzaa: Umoja – Unity; Kujichagulia – Self Determination; Ujima – Collective Work & Responsibility; Nia – Purpose; Kuumba – Creativity; Imani – Faith; Ujamaa – Cooperative Economics. The mission of the garden is to unite the community around these principles and provide a space in which residents can learn, grow, and get to know one another.

The Shawnee Garden of Principles is located at 303 Amy Ave. in the Shawnee neighborhood. The Shawnee Garden of Principles began in 2009 and quickly became a point of pride in the community. Members of the community of all ages came together to create a space where neighbors could grow healthy foods and get to know one another. Shawnee does not have a grocery store, so access to fresh fruits and vegetables is extremely limited. I believe that the revitalization of this garden can not only provide a point of pride within the neighborhood, but a vital link to healthier choices.

The Shawnee Garden of Principles provides the opportunity for individuals to not only grow their own food, but it allows them to take ownership of a piece of the community. The garden provides educational opportunities for local school children, and a place where families can bond and create lasting memories. For individuals not directly involved in the garden, the Shawnee Garden of Principles provides a beautiful point of pride. It is filled with flowers and plants and will give them a positive piece of Shawnee. In addition, there are plans to utilize half of the garden to grow produce that can be donated to the patients of Shawnee Christian Healthcare.
